Purpose of role 

OCO’s US team currently has an opening for an experienced Consultant.  The location is flexible, with a preference for New York or Chicago, remote working outside of these locations will also be considered.

We are looking for candidates with knowledge and experience of International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment.  The successful candidate will work as part of OCO’s Consulting team and will support the team in the successful delivery of high quality consulting services to our public and private sector clients.

This varied and exciting role will involve supporting companies with their international expansion strategies and site selection; working with a range of international and domestic Economic Development Organisations (EDOs) on value proposition development, global strategy implementation; as well as supporting international development agencies.

The role will involve travel both domestically and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

Under the management and direction of a Manager within the Consulting Team, this role will involve the following responsibilities:

  1. Delivering projects
  • Undertake quantitative and qualitative (often desk-based) research from a range of source
  • Set up stake holder interviews in support of client projects – via email and telephone calls
  • Support/ lead scope, plan, execute, and deliver projects within strict deadlines and within budget.  This includes managing resources for small medium sized projects and coordinating the efforts of the team to deliver scope according to plan
  • Assist in developing interview guides and surveys
  • Provide support/ lead in developing client deliverables (e.g. reports, including developing templates and writing introductory sections; PowerPoint presentations)
  • Undertake data analysis in excel, using excel functions and pivot tables
  • Support all business areas within OCO Global to develop PowerPoint presentations and provide other graphical information to contribute to client deliverables.
  • Support/ lead in managing projects through developing project plans, risk registers and reporting templates
  • Support / lead in the set up and delivery of workshops for clients
  • Support senior members of Consulting team on strategic project

2. Winning business

  • Support/ lead with developing bids for all business areas within OCO Global.
  • Contribute towards business development, including providing innovative solutions to client challenges and writing well developed proposal as part of the process of bidding for work through public procurement processes
  • Attend market engagement events
  • Support/ lead with preparing for pitches and presentations
  • Support/ lead to writing blogs and thought leadership pieces

Essential Criteria

  • Degree ideally in finance, politics, business or economic related discipline or equivalent professional qualification in Business Studies, (other disciplines will be considered where candidates can demonstrate core skills required).
  • Up to 3-4 years’ experience in a consulting/research role, preferably in an international business, Trade and/or FDI context.  Strong candidates with more general consulting backgrounds are welcomed.
  • Experience of working with Economic Development Organizations, ideally Investment or Export Promotion Agencies, either at a local or national level or in an international development environment
  • Experience working with private sector companies and supporting them with international expansion strategies
  • Report writing experience
  • Strong analytical, data modelling and problem-solving skills, including experience of excel (pivot tables and basic formulae)
  • Ability to think creatively and propose innovative solutions
  • Investigative mind-set and strong research skills
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Flexible to new situations and challenges
  • Self starter and motivated
  • Comfortable attending events, networking, and presenting to clients and stakeholders
  • Excellent Organizational and prioritization skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft office programs, particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal), additional languages are a plus
  • All applicants must be eligible to work in the US
  • Willingness to travel

Desirable Criteria

  • Business proficiency in Spanish
  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Understanding of FDI and trade processes
  • Data modelling skills (i.e., experience with Tableau, etc.)
